Idea Analysis
The parents are as flawed as their children
An idea explored in the movie is the parents of the students being just as flawed as the students themselves are.
John Bender is the 'criminal' of the group. He is perceived as violent and angry, but his father is violent towards him, burning him with a cigar for spilling paint in the garage. His father is also described as shouting at John quite often, just like John shouts at Mr. Vernon. John's father is essentially a more extreme version of John himself, a bigger criminal.
Allison is the reclusive 'basket case' of the group. She is quiet and strange, and takes the longest to open up. This comes from her parents, who she says ignore her. Her parents being reclusive towards her have resulted in her being reclusive towards everyone.
Andrew Clarke, being the 'athlete', has parents always telling him to win above anything. As a result, he feels the need to win everything from a sports competition to an argument with John Bender. However, this passion of winning only comes from his parents greater passion of winning.
Claire Standish, plays the role of the 'princess' of the group. Although her parents aren't described as being particularly into fashion trends, they are divorced, which can sometimes result in both the mother and the father spoiling the child with clothes or accessories to earn their respect and favourability.
Brian Johnson is the 'brain', and has a mother who forces him to be. Although his father doesn't seem to care, his mother enforces study on him, telling him that he has to find a way to study during the saturday detention. The knowledge seems to be in the family, with his little sister agreeing with a stern 'Yeah!'.

Peer pressure makes everyone open up
Peer pressure can get the better of anyone. In this movie it probably effects Claire Standish the most, as the characters are siting around on the upper storey of the library, the characters are to talking about sex, after Alison says that she is addicted to sex with random people, they ask Claire if "she has ever done it before," Claire refuses to answer the question. The group keeps heckling her about it until she can't take it anymore. Claire says "No" to ever having sex and starts crying after she admits it.

Everyone has similar problems even though it doesn't seem the case.
An idea that has been explored in the film is that everyone has similar problems even though it doesn't seem so.
John, Andrew, Claire, Allison and Brian all have similar problems at home with their parents.
John fights verbally and physically with his parents, Andrew is too afraid to confront his father to stop wrestling, Claire's parents don't listen to her but instead give or buy things for her, Allison's parents ignore her and Brian's parents expects him to do well in everything.

Everyone has their own problems
Everyone in “the breakfast club” has a problem or problems that they are dealing with, as is the case with most people in the real world. Brian Johnson for example is pressured at home by his parents and goes on the verge of suicide when he receives an F for his shop assignment, his first fail. He admits to not liking how he sees himself and is only like he is because of the pressure he is under to succeed. Claire Standish is only seen by her parents as a way of getting back at each other. She says if the they get a divorce, which could be any minute, she would rather go and live with her brother than with either of her parents. Andrew Clarke is forced by his father to compete in wrestling. He hates his dad but he still tries to make him proud, by trying to be more like him, which sees him getting a detention. John Bender probably has the most difficult problems, especially at home where he is hit, screamed at and punished by his mom and dad. He is threatened by Mr Vernon and not liked vey much by the others at school. He does have a group of friends but is influenced by them into doing drugs.
